Crawley Boxing Club’s junior star Matarr Wanda (16) wrote his name into the history books securing the England National Development Championship title on The Isle of Sheppey in Kent.
Wanda is pictured, above, with coach Paddy Harmy and chairman Geoff Hopcraft. His opponent Jake Simpkins from the South Derbyshire ABC and he carried an established record into the contest.
Crawley’s Wanda had won nine of his previous 11 bouts and the contest lived up to expectations.
The first round saw both boxers trying to establish dominance and finished up even with nothing to split them.
Round two saw Thomas Bennett Community College pupil Matarr up his game, showing he had the better skill as he started to outbox Simpkins with some very useful two-punch combinations.
He solved the problem of Simpkin’s awkward crouching style, bringing up some well timed hooks and uppercuts.
The third round saw Wanda pulling out all the stops, beating Simpkins to the punch time and again forcing the referee to jump in and administer a standing eight count towards the end.
Matarr took a unanimous decision from the judges and now looks forward to a short rest before resuming training for next year’s Youth championships.
