Crawley AC runners enjoyed a great success at the Sussex Masters Cross Country Championships in Lancing.
Although the athletes faced heavy rain on the journey to Lancing, by the time the races were held it was dry and quite cold.
Underfoot conditions were better than the athletes had faced for the main championships at Bexhill, although there were a few slippery sections to overcome on the downhill.
The first race of the day was the cmbined M50/M60 5mile event which had two long ascents to the dewpond atop the Downs. Taking M60 individual Bronze was Tony Lintern, and along with Dave Beattie and Walter Hill the team won M60 Gold.
Having a fine run having recovered from long term injury, Mark Parry finished ninth in the M50 race.
The Ladies had to face the climb to the dew pond once and the W35 team of Helen Reynolds, Sue Aldridge and Anne Matthews took the team bronze.
Facing the course last and with three climbs, the M40s had a six mile race. Neil Smith had a fine run with a strong finish to finish second and clinch the silver medal
Waterhall playing fields near Brighton were the venue once again for the Sussex Schools AA Cross Country Championships. All the runners had to face a constant, strong cold headwind, which meant for most age groups, (whose race included a large loop), the final half mile was a struggle into the wind.
Until the final Senior Boys and Girls races there was continuous sunshine, however by the time the later race started there was a dull grey sky which made the conditions seem even colder.
All the races featured a steep hill which contrasted the relative flatness of the football/rugby fields that formed the majority of the courses.
There was a fantastic run once again from Jade Doncaster (ICC year 10) who came a very close second in the Intermediate Girls (Year 10/11) 3.5km event. Jade was on the shoulder of the leader and was only just beaten in a sprint finish. With his best run of the season Tom Thayre (TBCC year 9) finished in second place in the Year 8/9) 4.3km race.
There were also top 10 finishes for Ben Golding (Oriel HS year 13) 5th Senior Boys (Years 12/13) 7.1km and Jasmine McMurray (Richard Collyers year 12) 7th Senior Girls (Years 12/13) 4.3km.
George Crocker (Hazelwick year 10) had to overcome losing a running shoe in his Intermediate Boys (Year 10/11) 6km event.
