After an eventful few weeks for two of Sussex’s National Banger teams, The Bears and Team Sowter faced off against each other in the Michael ‘Bandit’ Bailey Memorial meeting at King’s Lynn.
Whilst both teams will race on any track surface, Team Sowter have taken to shale in a big way in the past season, especially at the Mildenhall Stadium.
After their disappointment at the recent Aldershot meeting, Taylor Sowter in particular was keen to put in a sterling performance to entertain the crowd.
Meanwhile after their exploits in Ireland, and then the Van Bangers at Arlington, with the Bears having the defending champion Karl Day in their ranks, they felt it was also worthwhile to travel up to Norfolk.
In perfect conditions, the excellently prepared track was certain to give the drivers plenty to think about as they slid into every corner, especially with a few grudges outstanding among the gathered field of over seventy drivers.
Heat one saw a cagey start to the meeting. Quick to show as usual was Bears captain Nigel Riley. He was responsible for crashing into Gypsy Crew member Barry Overland. Nigel was then himself taken into the wall by Charlie Taylor of The Shunters.
Trying to recover his position, Riley was well and truly thumped.
Now with a puncture, he just about managed to keep his car going, enough to land a big hit on the oncoming Andy Battle.
It was Riley again who starred in the second heat.
On the prowl he first smacked Jono Brooks on the nose, only then to get caught against the wall by Shunter Sean Harvey.
Static, Riley then accelerated towards the unsuspecting Nicky Young, hitting him at speed.
The third heat saw Day collect Taylor Sowter and run him into the wall.
Bears team members Ash Riley and Paul Pentecost also both joined in the melee.
Despite his car taking a battering, Sowter made it out for the final and DD.
Tom Waller attacked Bear Keiron Fry, which meant retaliation from Day and Pentecost. Sowter circled around the wall and thumped into the pile, only to receive a blow himself.
Backing up his colleague, Tom Filmer first gathered retribution, and then endurance saw him runner up in the DD to Ben Harrison.
