Nathan wins tennis title

Nathan Jackson beat Alex Mays 6-4, 6-4 in a close-fought final of the youth singles championship at Newhaven Tennis Club on Sunday.

Long rallies were typical and usually started with pinpoint accurate baseline exchanges. Each player sought out openings for attacking volleys but as both had agility and speed around the court any non-winner was frequently punished with a telling passing shot or lob.

The first set looked to be heading for a tiebreak before Jackson got the vital points to secure a 6-4 advantage.

The second set started in the same vein, with the players winning alternate games, and Mays initially looked confident that he could extend the match to three sets.

However, Jackson pulled ahead to lead 5-3 and from that point Mays was up against it. Jackson held his nerve when Mays saved match points and finally earned a well-deserved title after a series of skilful drop shots and a helpful net cord.
