New dawn for Bexhill snooker

BEXHILL will be back in the East Sussex Snooker Association next winter.

The decision to re-join after a hiaitus of several years is great news for the whole of the Bexhill League with a huge opportunity for all the players to showcase their skills and temperament on a higher plane.

And there's every chance of two teams representing the town at inter-league level. Conservative Club A captain Gary Davies is expected to skipper a side consisting of players from any club that's interested while Dave Coley could lead a line-up from O'Sullivan's.

The League will certainly be looking at O'Sullivan's to provide one home and other clubs are welcome to get involved.

Bexhill League Secretary George Ould said: "The Bexhill Snooker League will be involved in the East Sussex Association next winter. We will be working with O'Sullivan's and Gary Davies in the hope that more than one club will become involved."

There will be one or two youngsters around the league who will be glad to test themselves, particularly Wayne Perna whose spellbinding form against Gerard Moyse in the final of the Team Knockout was worthy of the bigger stage.

Another young gun who should be knocking on the door is Oliver Cornwall, who compiled a 39 break in taking the High Handicap title from Ould in straight frames. Steve Aldous and Stuart Funnell, another who could be involved at inter-league level, pipped Linda Butler and Rob Wren, one more who has the talent to perform on the county scene, to the Pairs Handicap crown.

Meanwhile, O'Sullivan's is to stage its third Sunday Knockout Competition this weekend.

The first two stagings have been an overwhelming success with the influx of Hastings players Joe Moore, Adam Appleby and Luke Herring, who would be eligible to represent Bexhill next winter if they elect to join a club, providing a sky-high standard. Entry costs 10 with registration taking place from 2pm in time for a 2.30pm start.

Rhys Bennett leads James Davies 1-0 in the final of the second O'Sullivan's Stars of the Future grand prix round with the tie to be settled tomorrow (Saturday) morning.
