Fontwell's new festive blow: Not only 'no crowd' - now it's 'no racing'

Fontwell Park officials will be glad to see the back of 2020 more than most - after wet weather claimed Monday's festive fixture.

Bosses had already had to abandon plans to welcome a crowd of 2,000 for the fixture - switched from its traditional Boxing Day slot - after Sussex was moved into tier four Covid lockdown restrictions as of today.

They did plan to run racing behind closed doors, but excessive rain in the area has even put paid to that.

It is another blow to Fontwell, who managed to squeeze in just one race meeting with a crowd - a fortnight ago - in the spell in which punters were permitted. That was the first time sinve mid-March that they had been able to welcome the paying public.

Now Fontwell and their owners ARC will be hoping that 2021 brings better fortunes and plenty of chances for the racegoing public to visit.
