Heath RFC has a lot to celebrate at the turn of 2016 with thriving teams at all ages throughout the Club and some fantastic results in both the junior and senior sections, giving players and supporters alike a lot to look forward to in the second half of the season.

Haywards Heath RFC Under 14s unbeaten start to the season saw them finish the calendar year with a 70-5 bonus point win away at Hove to consolidate their lead at the top of the table.

However the Sussex champions had another fixture lined up before 2015 was over at the home of Kent county champions Sevenoaks. A tough 0-0 first half of the fixture saw Heath up against it before both sides made a few changes.

The unbeaten Sevenoaks finally succumbed by three tries to one but gave Heath by far their toughest match of the season. Weather permitting, next week sees them away at Brighton in the league.

And it’s not just Heath’s mini and junior sections that have been working hard for success this season.

Not to be completely beaten by the weather Heath coaches and senior players put their time to good use on Saturday discussing team tactics in the dry of the Clubhouse since the Mid Sussex weather last week had made the pitches at Whitemans Green unplayable.

Heath 1st XV have been undefeated since the uncharacteristic but timely wake-up call in the opening match of the season. The 1st XV squad, proudly sponsored by Vines of Gatwick BMW, sits second in Sussex Spitfire League 1 on the back of 10 successive wins having played one match less than current leaders Lewes.

This is a local rivalry that looks set to go all the way for the league title this season and having gone away and beaten Lewes on their own turf in October, Heath will have a battle on their hands when the two teams clash again at Whitemans Green the last weekend of January.

Put the 30 January in your diary and check the website at hhrfc.co.uk for more details – all support welcome for what is sure to be an entertaining match.

Heath 2nd XV is also enjoying a fruitful season and is sitting top of the Sussex ‘Late Red’ League 3 after seven wins out of eight having put together a brand of inclusive rugby that is fun for everyone in the squad.

So the Club has a lot to look forward to in the second half of the season and is hopeful that the weather will improve and allow the squads to get back out on the pitches as soon as possible. Anyone interested in playing rugby – any age or ability – or interested in joining the active touch rugby sessions – should contact Heath Director of Rugby Glen Jones on [email protected] . Alternatively go along to Whitemans Green and meet the local community rugby crowd during February/March as all the England 6 Nations matches will be screened live in the Clubhouse.
