Sussex were drawn on points with 3 other sides at the top of the table for the South JAC County championships coming into the final weekend.

Sussex knew that 2 Wins on Sunday at home in Hurstpeirpoint would put them in a strong position to win the championship.

Their 1st match against Hampshire was 1 all at half time after Sussex scored an excellent penalty corner through Phoebe Workman only to have Hampshire get an equally well worked penalty corner 5 minutes later. In the second half Sussex’s relentless pressure resulted in a 2nd goal scored by Jemima Spurr after a scramble in the D.

Sussex were unlucky at the end when the final whistle robbed them of a penalty stroke after the Hampshire keeper was injured in a clash with Katya Bingle-Williams. Despite all the pressure their second game against Oxfordshire resulted in a 0-0 draw. Sussex had all the play including 11 penalty corners and one penalty stroke but some excellent scramble defence and brilliant saves from the keeper kept Oxfordshire in the match.

This result meant Sussex had to wait to hear the other results to find out where they would come.

The final Table had them runners up behind Berkshire on the same points and same goal difference but unfortunately with one less “goal for”.

Hopefully next year they can go one better to win the Championship.

The Sussex players of the championship were Phoebe Workman and Molly Cummins in defence, Captain Nancy Harman in midfield, Katya Bingle-Williams in attack and Pippa Lock as the overall player. The team would like to thank their coach Scott Simkins for all his time and work with them this season.
