United's cup adventure is over

WORTHING UNITED Football Club's excellent cup run came to an end at Maidenhead on Saturday but only after they gave their Southern League opponents a mighty scare.

Down 2-0 at half-time, United pulled a goal back within seconds of the restart and caused several anxious moments in Maidenhead's defence before man of the match, Lee Newman, who started the season with Worthing, settled the outcome on 69 minutes.

Despite being roared on by a vocal travelling support, United suffered a dobule blow in the opening 10 minutes.

Striker Gavin Geddes tweaked a hamstring so was forced to play only as a targetman and Maidenhead then took the lead. Mark Nisbet had missed an early opening for the home side before Dwain Clarke hit a 20-yard stunner into the top corner, giving United keeper Sam Figg no chance.

Geddes' headed a difficult opportunity wide for United midway through the first half before Magpies' striker, Craig O'Connor had an effort tipped onto the bar and over by Figg.
