Young guns cheer Sidley

REJUVENATED Sidley surged up to second place in Sussex Division Two with a thumping win at home to Haywards Heath.

A dashing innings of 85 from man of the match Chris Deeprose paved the way for a third victory in six matches to leave them just nine points behind leaders Lewes Priory.

Captain Scott Woodroffe admitted the campaign was going better than expected. "At the start of the season we would have settled for mid table," he said. "I'm really pleased and we have just got to keep it going. We've worked really hard and we don't want to get carried away but we deserve to be second, we have been playing good cricket and positive cricket."

The young guns of Deeprose and Jonathan Haffenden (62) saw them through a potentially sticky situation as at one stage Sidley were in trouble at 115-5. Their efforts meant they were able to post an imposing total of 252-7.

The Heath reply hinged on the run out of their overseas player who was sent back to the pavilion by a lightning piece of fielding by Kevin Deeprose. "That was probably the turning point," said Woodroffe. "Had he stayed they might have saved the game. But we could then set attacking fields for the majority of the game."

Imran Javed snapped up 4-67 as Heath were dismissed for 172. He was backed up by the trio of Peter King, Tyrone Wildman and Deeprose who each claimed a couple of wickets.

Sidley take on St James' Montefiore at Gullivers on Saturday June 21.
