A-levels: Head's pride as Ifield students head to university

Ifield Community College has seen the next generation of song-writers, forensic psychologists, architects and civil engineers head off to university.

The college’s 97 per cent A-level pass rate left principal Rob Corbett praising the hard work of his students even as he prepared to welcome the next sixth-formers in September.

Mr Corbett said: “A-level results day is about securing young people’s futures.

“I am extremely proud of all of our students and the staff who have supported them so well.

“We set ambitious and challenging targets for our students, work with them to develop their confidence and provide an ethos in which they can study and thrive.”

Among the students who came in for well-deserved praise were:

Maryam Pasha, who achieved an impressive record of A*, A*, B, C and C grades in English Literature, Law, Religious Studies, Biology and Chemistry and she will be reading English Literature at Durham University.

Maryam was also the recipient of the college’s Sarah Robinson award which should help her prepare for all the book purchases she will need for her degree.

Another outstanding student was Ashley Marks who is preparing to attend Bath University to study Pharmacology. He gained A*, A, A and B grades across mathematics, sciences and music.

Several students are off to top universities including Ria Emsley (B,B,B) and Reece Fraser (A*, B,B).

Reece will be studying mathematics further at the University of Surrey while Ria is pursuing philosophy and politics at King’s College, London.

Ellen Burt was also an outstanding student with her grades leading to a place to study Sport and Exercise Psychology at Chichester University.

This is alongside her role as a member of the County Women’s Cricket team and her place in the England Academy.

Mr Corbett pointed out that many of the students had become the first generation within their families to be offered a place at university.

He said: “They have chosen study in areas as diverse as song-writing, forensic psychology, physiotherapy, physics, architecture, business management, paramedic science, civil engineering, biological sciences, chemistry and music journalism.”

Mr Corbett added: “We wish them all great success in their futures and we now look forward with tremendous enthusiasm and excitement to welcoming the new sixth form joining us in September.”
