The young shoppers were volunteers taking part in a test purchase operation run by the police on October 29.

Sussex Police say the premises that sold alcohol to them were: Himani Stores, Langley Parade; Galaxy Internet Cafe, Ifield Road, and Handy Corner, East Park, Southgate. Each member of staff involved received a £90 penalty notice.

Four premises refused to sell to the child volunteers: Boulevard Newsagents, The Boulevard, Northgate; West Sussex Wines, Ifield Drive, Ifield; Booze Express, Broadfield Barton and Star Wines, Ifield Road, West Green.

Sergeant Mike Balmer of the West Sussex neighbourhood licensing team said: “It is disappointing that three stores have failed in their resposibility to promote the licensing objectives; in particular protecting children from harm. Shop owners who break the law when selling alcohol not only risk fines, they also put their licence at risk. All these premises will be re-tested.

“However, I am pleased that there were those who did not sell alcohol to our volunteers and I hope that this sends a message to all those working in similar premises that they must remain alert to their responsibilities at all times.”
