Shoppers have been urged not to take them from the town’s supermarkets after concerns the trolleys were creating an eyesore and safety risk for children were raised.

A spokesman said: “The call follows concerns about abandoned shopping trolleys raised by residents and councillors, in particular in West Green and Northgate.”

Cllr Colin Lloyd, Cabinet member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “We have lots of supermarkets around town which offer a great choice for our residents but unfortunately some people seem to abandon trolleys which they take away from supermarkets.

“We want to remind supermarket customers that taking trolleys away with them often means they end up somewhere in Crawley looking an eyesore and sometimes posing a danger to younger children.”

Abandoned trolleys are reported to Trolleywise, the appointed collection service for Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys.

To report an abandoned trolley from one of these supermarkets, email [email protected] or call 0800 316 1241.

A Trolleywise app enables people to take pictures of stray trolleys which will then attach a GPS location to the image.

Cllr Lloyd said: “If you see abandoned trolleys anywhere in Crawley please contact Trolleywise and they will remove them within a few days.”
