LETTER: Referendum on town changes

After the democratic procedure of having a referendum regarding the EU, it's a big pity that Crawley Council did not follow suit and give its residents the option on voting on the Queens Square revamp.

If the people in Crawley were asked if they wanted the bandstand moved AND suffer the cost of £ 3,000,000.00 (looks bigger when number is shown) for the revamp OR have those monies put towards the Emergency services (giving £1 MILLION to the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services to improve their dwindling services due to outrageous Government demands to create preposterous ‘savings’) or having the Council Tax reduced for a year or helping the homeless, I wonder which way they would vote.

Crawley town centre has become and will remain a semi ghost town, filled with cafes, charity shops and empty shops. I believe that the shops remain empty is that the rents are too high to attract names and internet shopping undercuts (generally what High Street retailers charge), so will the revamp do ANY good?

The council’s intelligent approach to having more housing within the town’s boundaries is another reason why the new revamp will be a white elephant.

Finally. on the subject of housing, can anyone explain the logic of Crawley experiencing what can only be described as a population explosion and still do nothing to support the ever increasing numbers (1981 population was 82,100, in 2014 population was 109,900) and not having a modern hospital operating an A & E Department?

How many people have lost loved ones because they had to be transported to East Surrey Hospital Redhill (since Crawley’s A&E shut)? On top of that, reduced police funding/numbers (and the same for the Fire Service) is beyond my comprehension Can anyone explain?
