He not only won, but also improved his handicap.

This feat was surprising when you add in the fact that it was the first time he had played from the back Men’s competition tees.

Perhaps the most remarkable story of the day was written by Ifield’s Harry Rothwell, who won the High Handicap Award.

In the first round he beat his handicap by no fewer than seven strokes, in itself a fine achievement.

In the second round he made Ifield Golf Club history when he beat his handicap by a colossal 23 strokes, making him 30 under-par over the two rounds.

Both Luke and Harry have been part of Ifield’s junior squad coaching sessions, run by club professional Mathew Michael, and have also received individual lessons from head professional Jon Earl.

Both coaches had expected their handicaps to come down as they were taught more and played more, but were astonished that it should happen so dramatically in their first serious competition.
