The recently-established Chabad of Worthing held its first Chanukah lighting evening outside Worthing Town Hall on Tuesday. The event was led by the new Worthing Shaliach, Rabbi Shaya Gourarie from New York, supported by Rabbi Pesach Efune of Chabad Brighton and Rabbi Zalman Lewis, Chabad South East Coast Universities.

There were more than 100 people present, from Worthing and the surrounding areas, including Worthing mayor Henna Chowdhury. She and Rabbi Gourarie both spoke to the assembled crowd. Rabbi Gourarie said: “I am thrilled to be leading the Chabad initiative in Worthing and am delighted at the turn out last night, and the interest already shown in the new Chabad of Worthing, which augurs well for the future.”

Rabbis Efune and Lewis, together with local resident Gerry Crest, have been the architects of Chabad Worthing, which Rabbi Shaya Gourarie and his young family are intent on growing. There is an expanding Jewish community in Worthing and the local area to tap into, they said.
